Judge Overturns $38 Million Wrongful Death Verdict in Korryn Gaines Case

According to reports, a Baltimore County judge reportedly overturned a $38 million wrongful death award that went to the family of Korryn Gaines.

In 2016, Gaines was killed by the Baltimore police after a six-hour standoff where she allegedly tried to point a shotgun at police officers who trying to serve an arrest warrant. Gaines’ family sued the Baltimore County Police, claiming the officers used excessive force that resulted in her five-year-old son Kofi being injured along with her death. The jury in the wrongful death suit sided with the family.

Now news has surfaced saying a judge dismissed the family’s claims against Corporal Royce Ruby Jr—the person who shot Korryn Gaines, as well as claims against Baltimore County. The circuit judged cited “Qualified Immunity,” which shields government officials and law enforcement agencies from civil liability while in the middle of carrying out duties.
