Nakuru woman set ablaze by husband succumbs to burn injuries

A Nakuru trader who was doused with petrol by her husband and set on fire has succumbed to burns she sustained during the incident.

Lucy Nyira, a mother of three, died at the Nakuru County Referral Hospital where she was receiving treatment.

Her face, torso and hand were seriously burnt with doctors who assessed her saying she had 25 per cent burns.

The lady who trades in second-hand clothes had just arrived home on Saturday evening when her husband set on her with kicks and blows.

She had gone to Nairobi to buy stock for her business and arrived home at about 8 pm which angered her spouse.

The husband, Bernard Kariha, accused her of coming home late since he expected her journey from Nairobi to take two hours.

Her neighbour, Eunice Watiri, said Nyira lost consciousness when her husband poured petrol on her and set her ablaze.

Kariha repairs motorbikes at Kiratina Estate where he lived with his family.

He surrendered himself at the Nakuru Central Police Station on Sunday where he has been held since.

Nakuru East Sub County Police Commandant, Stephen Matu said he will be arraigned on Monday to answer murder charges.
